This vase is inspired by Hanami (花見, "flower viewing") which is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers. Flowers ("hana") are in this case almost always referring to those of the cherry ("sakura") or, less frequently, plum ("ume") trees.
I was lucky enough to have a couple of exhibitions in Yokohama many years ago and so got to spend some time travelling around Japan. The cherry blossom viewing was one of the highlights.
This was made in October 2022
It is a signed and dated piece and
stands 14.5cms high by 11.5cms wide x 9cms deep
